Day: A Novel

Had TONS Of Writing & Cross outs in it
Outside of the book looked good. I know when you buy a used book they listed as good/acceptable, very good etc. MOST sellers will give a general "stipulation" & Most of the ones I've dealt with though have written if there is any damage to the cover or if it's missing if it's a HC. If it's a soft cover like this, they'll write if there's a tear or writing in it. This seller did not. So I just briefly flipped through it. It must have belonged to a student who literally crossed at words in the story w/ markers & pens. Then rode other words/ short sentences above it or just a singular word. I bought it for myself to read since when I was in 9th grade. Many many moons ago 1990-1991 " Night" was on our summer reading list so that was summer of 1990. I had no idea that this book which is the third and final book in the series even existed as well as the book in the Middle. I will NEVER buy another book from the seller AGAIN!! NOT EVEN IF IT'S A NEW ONE! When I buy used books. I tried to buy from Goodwill since the money goes to a good cause. I don't know if this was Goodwill. I didn't even go back and look to double check. However when purchasing ALL USED books I will buy a used HC book if it is missing that cover/ dust cover. Whatever you want to call it, especially if it deals with WWII,, Since that's one of my favorite time periods. I was a school teacher. I taught elementary school. I have a BS in elementary and special education with a MS in Liberal Arts and education. I would have loved to have gotten my masters in history specifically in that time. But I already had a job & tenure So at that point to save money I went to a school where I could just pay out of pocket. I obviously wasn't going to give up what I love. Any books that I buy and don't fall in love with. My cousin has his own website and Upstate New York not affiliated with third party things and he sells books, does book giveaways, donates books and good conditions for kids, young adults, adults in need but they need to be in anywhere from excellent to near mint condition. Near mint condition. I know this is a book I would keep but eventually when I pass on it's something that would have to good give to my local Goodwill in CT w/the other 2 in The set. My copy of " Night" from my Catholic HS was either lost when we moved from LI, NY up to CT or My sister may have used it when She needed it for her summer reading summer before 9th grade 5 years after me. After that it may have been donated. But we're not talking about "Night" here and I never really fell in love with reading and so college since I always knew I needed glasses. Many doctors said I didn't well when I got into college. Sure enough. Yes I needed glasses! Ever since then I've had them and have been reading feverously since them. I'm extremely disappointed! So buyers beware from this seller! I suggest before purchasing ASK ANY & ALL QUESTIONS!!!!!

Brings you into the mind of Elie Wiesel; contains some sexual scenes
While not, in my opinion, as good as "Dawn", "Day is nonetheless incredibly good, and Elie Wiesel still himself to be one of the best writers of the 20th century, and someone who can consistently write books that speak to the soul. While this is a very simple and straightforward book, it speaks to me on deep levels, and I connect with it. The ultimate theme is "Can someone who has experienced pure evil ever truly move on?" Can someone of the main character's background ever heal? I won't give away Wiesel's ultimate answer to that question, but he gives his final thoughts on the matter rather abruptly in the last two pages."Day" combines elements from both "Night" and "Dawn" by using the chapter lengths and the somewhat autobiographical style of the former and the flashbacks and the thanatopsis of the latter (I apologize for the use of such an obscure word, but it was the only one that seemed to fit). The book is fictional, but pulls significantly from actual things that happened to Wiesel. It also has a very short timeline in which the character doesn't do muh except internalize a great deal of tortured thoughts and recall memories that give us all of the relevant social, emotional, and spiritual context for his predicament. Like "Dawn", there technically isn't much of a plot, but what is there is so mesermizing that one simply can't put down the book. The English translations of "Night" and "Dawn" both had brief moments of sexuality, so I wasn't surprised to find that such scenes appeared in "Day" as well, although said sexual moments are somewhat more jarring than in the previous works. There are more of those scenes, and they go on a bit longer. I was reading "Day" out loud to someone, and was quite thankful that she was an adult when I got to these points in the book, although it was still a little awkward. Wiesel doesn't describe actual intercourse, so it's far from pornographic reading, and there is a point in illustrating the character's sexuality in this story. Some people believe that all sex in literature is pointless and "lessens" the impact and the sincerity of the art, but I would disagree, and this book is an example of why. I flinched only because I was reading it to an older lady; otherwise I had no problem with it. Of course, it is something worth singling out in a review, since I know that many prospective readers are sensitive to this.

Good condition, but
The pages were yellowed (more on the edges than near the center) and a little brittle as if the book was very old. This does not affect its readability, but might affect its longevity.

Metaphorical beyond me.
The constant metaphor made the understanding of experiences difficult to follow and comprehend. I had to force myself to finish all three books with the hope that the meaning would come to me while reflecting or by going back and reading them again. Too deep for this reader!

Like lambs they were led to the slaughter
Night fully meets our expectations of the horror, torture and murder delivered by the Nazis and SS to and upon the Jewish people. Wiesel's writings enlightened me as to some of the historical and personal aspects of those things which happened to Czechoslovakian Jews. He personalizes the Jewish people of his neighborhood with names and personalities. Like lambs they were led to the slaughter. After all, it happened to him, to his brothers, his sister and his Mother and Father. Most of the time he and his Father stuck together, protected, to the degree possible, one another and then he loses his Father just before the liberation of the survivors of the concentration camp. It is very well written and personalizes the horrible genocide of the European Jews by Nazi Germany. Your designations for the star ratings are not thoughtful. According to your rating a 5 star rating means you love it. This book is wonderfully written but I cannot say I love a story of hooror, torture and murder. My 5 star rating does not mean "I love it".

A must read
I am a huge fan of Elie Wiesel so was very happy with this book, since I read "Night" and saw his interview with Oprah Winfrey, I was hooked. The writing is graceful and strong and poignant. Elie Wiesel came out of a hellish place and was restored, enlightened, changed, and forgiving. His writing is soft and passionate and easy to read. The price was reasonable and the book was delivered very quickly. I am currently reading 'Dawn' and 'Day' by the same author.
