Kind of pointless in a way
This pin pointer literally only works when placed directly on top of the item. I had to use and depend on my metal detector most of the time to make sure I was still close to my target. I'm not sure if it's even worth the money the spent for it.

It appears the previous reviewers have completely missed the point of a pinpointer
Your browser does not support HTML5 video. It appears the previous reviewers have completely missed the point of a pinpointer. They recommend using a full size metal detector for treasure hunting. No kidding. I would, too. No one would ever use a pinpointer to search a field. So what's a pinpointer do? Well, the full size metal detector will find metal within a certain area. Sometimes, it's hard to tell exactly where in that small area the metal object is. Often, it's coated in dirt and grime. We can't tell what's setting it off and where exactly it lies. That's when we pull out the pinpointer and start poking it around that little patch of dirt. You will be very close. You know about where it is, but you don't know exactly where it is. Sometimes, a metal-rich rock is setting it off. That's hard to tell with the big metal detector, but aha! The pinpointer will let you know.Yes, you have to get close (within half an inch). That's the whole point. This pinpointer works exactly as it should. It is as good as another pinpointer I own from Fisher. In fact, if I didn't label this pinpointer, I wouldn't be able to tell them apart. They look the same and are equally as sensitive. This product was provided for review by Pro Detector.

Pro-Detector TX-2003B Review
My first impression was that it was very light in weight. The electronics inside must be pretty simple. It came with a nylon carrying case with a belt strap. It uses a 9 volt battery which is not included. There is an end cap at the bottom of the unit that you pull straight out to insert the battery. The end cap does not unscrew. It is held in by two plastic clips that extend into the battery compartment. There is one knob that you turn clockwise to turn on the power and adjust the sensitivity. There are no external jacks or indicator lights. The unit is equipped with a 4 inch plastic wand that extends from the body of the unit.Performance Test: After installing the battery, you turn the on/off knob clockwise slightly. You immediately hear a continuous tone being given off. You have to continue turning the knob clockwise until about 3/4 turn before the tone will stop. This is the point where you can start using the device to detect metal. If you continue turning the knob clockwise, it has less and less sensitiity and eventually will not be able to detect metal at all. So there is a very narrow range when you are turning the knob that can detect metal. Maybe 2 degrees. The only part of the wand probe that can detect metal is the last one inch near the tip. It only has a 3/4 inch range. I tested it against a refrigerator and after the probe tip was moved out past 3/4 inch, the unit could no longer detect the refrigerator. So the range is 3/4 inch, regardless of the size of the metal object. I tested the device on it's ability to detect metal coins. It was able to detect quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies. Conclusion: If you want to go treasure hunting, get yourself a full size metal detector. They have a much greater range. Use the Pro-Detector TX-2003B to help in narrowing down the exact location of the metal. It is relatively inexpensive and I recommend it.
